How much do language lessons cost in York in 2026?

In York, as elsewhere in Yorkshire and the Humber, a private tutor who comes to your home usually charges £25 to £45 an hour, more in London, depending on the language, experience and the level you aim for. A language school charges more for one-to-one teaching, often £40 to £70 an hour, but also runs small-group classes at around £10 to £20 an hour per student.

Online, the range is wider: native tutors teach from about £8 to £30 an hour, more for exam preparation or a rarer language. Packages of ten or twenty hours bring the hourly price down. Council evening classes cost around £100 to £250 for a ten-week term.

Private tutor or language school in York: how to choose

A language school in York gives you a framework: a placement test, a programme, classrooms, sometimes evening group classes and exam sessions on site. A private tutor follows your pace and your goals: an hour a week on business English, two conversation sessions before a trip, targeted work on listening.

To decide, ask yourself three questions: what level are you aiming for and by when, how much time can you give it each week, and do you need a certificate. An exam goal points to a school or a tutor who prepares that exam; a need to speak quickly and often points to a private tutor, face to face or by video.

Adult language learning in York: evening classes, intensive courses and online

As an adult, you learn while you work: evening classes, lunchtime sessions and intensive courses during holidays are the most popular formats in York. An intensive course of 20 to 30 hours over one or two weeks moves you up a level once you have the basics; for a complete beginner, two regular sessions a week work better than one block.

College and university lifelong learning departments in North Yorkshire usually enrol in September and January, sometimes in April. Check whether the course leads to a qualification, such as a GCSE, a Cambridge exam or a language's official certificate, if you need proof of your level.

The school near you or the tutor online: the two complement each other. By video, you keep the one-to-one attention of a private lesson without the journey, and choose your tutor from their profile.
