Modern Greek lessons in Highfields: first steps and pace
The Greek alphabet looks daunting but takes most adults a couple of weeks: many letters are familiar from maths and science. Then come the three genders, cases and the verb system, introduced gradually by a good tutor.
Greek and Cypriot community schools teach mostly children, so adults in Highfields tend to learn with a private tutor, about £20 to £40 an hour, at a university evening course in larger towns in East Midlands, or online with a native tutor from around £12. Two lessons a week make holiday conversations easy after six months.
The Certificate of Attainment in Greek: exams from Highfields
The Centre for the Greek Language runs the Certificate of Attainment in Greek, from A1 to C2, with exam centres abroad, including in the UK. A2 is the level asked for Greek long-term residence; B1 for citizenship. Adults can also sit GCSE Modern Greek as private candidates.
From Highfields, plan around a year of regular lessons to pass A2. A tutor will prepare you for the oral exam, which tests conversation on everyday topics. Greek Orthodox churches and Greek Cypriot associations often host events where learners are welcome to practise.

Greek courses: three ways to make progress
One lesson a week over the year
The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.
A sprint before an exam
Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.
Pure conversation to build confidence
No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.
Greek courses in Highfields: common questions
How long does it take to learn Greek for holidays?
For ordering, shopping and simple chats, a term of weekly lessons is enough. To follow a real conversation, count a year or more. A native tutor online is a good way to train your ear before travelling.
Should I learn Modern or Ancient Greek?
Modern Greek if you want to talk to people. Ancient Greek is studied for literature, philosophy or theology and is a different subject, taught by some universities and classics associations.
