Korean lessons in Six Hills: from Hangul to real conversations

Hangul, the Korean alphabet, is one of the most logical writing systems in the world: most adults read it after a few lessons. The challenges come next: sentence endings that change with politeness, particles, and pronunciation changes between words.

Korean classes are offered by the Korean Cultural Centre UK in London, some universities and King Sejong Institutes in East Midlands. Outside those, learners in Six Hills usually choose private tutors, around £25 to £40 an hour, or native tutors online, often £10 to £25. Watching dramas with Korean subtitles makes a perfect homework.

TOPIK: the Korean proficiency test for learners near Six Hills

TOPIK I covers levels 1 and 2, TOPIK II levels 3 to 6. Korean universities and employers usually ask for level 3 to 5; level 2 is a solid first goal. The test is held a few times a year in the UK, including in London.

From Six Hills, two lessons a week bring most motivated beginners to TOPIK level 2 in about a year. A tutor helps you master the reading speed and the listening sections, the two that surprise candidates most.

Korean courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.

Korean courses in Six Hills: common questions

How quickly can I learn to read Korean?

Hangul can be learnt in a weekend and read fluently in a few weeks. Understanding what you read is another matter: vocabulary and grammar take months. A tutor makes sure you pronounce words correctly from day one.

Are there Korean classes outside London?

Some universities and cultural associations teach Korean in other cities, but provision is thin. Many learners outside London learn with a native tutor by video, which also gives access to evening and weekend slots.
