What a German lesson looks like in Soho

A first German lesson starts with greetings, numbers and the sounds that trip up English speakers. Grammar arrives quickly: three genders, cases and verbs that move to the end of the sentence. A good tutor introduces them through real situations rather than tables.

Group classes in Greater London follow a course book level by level, A1, A2, B1. One-to-one lessons in Soho, in person or by video, go at your pace and spend more time on speaking. Expect £25 to £45 an hour for a local tutor, less online, and around £150 to £300 for a term of evening classes.

Goethe-Zertifikat and TestDaF: German exams near Soho

The Goethe-Institut runs its own centres in London and Glasgow and licenses partner exam centres, where you can sit the Goethe-Zertifikat from A1 to C2. A1 is often required for a family reunion visa to Germany; B1 or B2 for many jobs; C1 or TestDaF for German universities.

From Soho, plan around 150 to 200 hours of study to pass B1 from scratch. A tutor who knows the exam format will train you on the speaking part and the timed writing tasks.

German courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.

German courses in Soho: common questions

How long does it take an adult to learn German?

German is a medium-difficulty language for English speakers. With two lessons a week and some daily practice, most adults reach A2 in about a year and B1 in eighteen months. Intensive courses shorten this considerably.

Do I need German A1 to move to Germany with my partner?

For many non-EU nationals joining a spouse in Germany, yes: the visa usually asks for a basic A1 certificate. Rules change, so check with the German embassy before booking an exam date.
