ESOL classes in Durham: who can study for free

ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is the name of English courses for adults living in England. Colleges and council adult learning services in County Durham run them in the daytime and evening, from Pre-Entry level for complete beginners up to Level 2. Depending on your residency status, benefits and income, the course may be free or cost a reduced fee; otherwise expect around £150 to £400 a term.

Places fill quickly in September and January, and most providers ask you to sit a short assessment first. If the waiting list in Durham is long, a private or online tutor keeps you moving in the meantime.

IELTS, Cambridge or a SELT test in Durham: which English exam?

The exam depends on your goal. Universities ask for IELTS Academic or a Cambridge certificate such as C1 Advanced; employers often accept Cambridge B2 First. A visa, settlement or citizenship application asks for an approved Secure English Language Test (SELT), such as IELTS for UKVI or Trinity GESE, usually at A1, A2 or B1 level.

Preparation courses in Durham focus on the test format, timing and the speaking interview. A one-to-one tutor who knows the exam can target your weakest paper: with an existing intermediate level, eight to twelve weeks of regular lessons is a realistic run-up to IELTS.

Speaking English at work in Durham: conversation and business English

Many adults in Durham already read English well but freeze on the phone or in meetings. Conversation lessons and business English courses work on exactly that: accents, small talk, emails, presentations, interviews. A private tutor charges around £25 to £45 an hour face to face; online tutors start lower. Two short sessions a week plus a few minutes of listening every day, radio, podcasts, local news, make the difference within a term. Outside lessons, volunteering, a conversation club at the library or a community café in County Durham gives you real practice with local accents.

English as a foreign language courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.

English as a foreign language courses in Durham: common questions

Are ESOL courses free in Durham?

Often, but not always. In England, adult ESOL can be fully funded for learners who meet residency rules and are unemployed or on a low income. Others pay a reduced or full fee. Ask the college or adult learning service directly: it checks eligibility at enrolment.

How long does it take to get from beginner to B1 English?

Count roughly 350 to 400 hours of guided learning, plus practice. With two classes a week and daily use of English at work or in the shops, many adults reach B1 in one to two years; a tutor can speed up the speaking part.
