Turkish uses the Latin alphabet with a few extra letters, and is written as it is pronounced. Its logic is different from English: words are built by adding suffixes, and vowels follow a rule called vowel harmony. Once you see the pattern, it is remarkably regular.

Turkish courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.

Turkish courses in Summertown: common questions

Is Turkish hard to learn for English speakers?

The structure is unfamiliar at first, with long words built from suffixes, but the grammar has very few exceptions and spelling is phonetic. Many learners find it gets easier as they go.

Can I take a GCSE in Turkish as an adult?

Yes, as a private candidate through an exam centre that accepts external candidates. It assesses the four skills and is a good first certificate for heritage learners.
