Swedish lessons in Longdowns: a friendly language for English speakers

Swedish grammar is kind to English speakers: verbs do not change with the person, and word order is familiar. The music of the language, its pitch accent and vowels, needs a native ear, which is why one-to-one lessons work so well.

Swedish classes are rare in Cornwall, limited to a few universities and Scandinavian associations. Most learners in Longdowns choose a private tutor at about £25 to £40 an hour, or a native tutor online from around £12. Norwegian and Danish become partly readable as a bonus.

Swedex and Tisus: proving your Swedish level from Longdowns

Swedex certifies levels A2 to B2 and is taken at a few centres abroad. Tisus is the C1 test that gives access to Swedish universities. If you move to Sweden, the free state programme SFI (Swedish for immigrants) takes over.

From Longdowns, two lessons a week bring most English speakers to a comfortable A2 within six to nine months. Watching Swedish series with Swedish subtitles is excellent homework between lessons. Scandinavian societies in some English cities also run social evenings open to learners.

Swedish courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.

Swedish courses in Longdowns: common questions

Is Swedish easy to learn?

It is one of the easier languages for English speakers: simple verbs, familiar vocabulary and word order. Pronunciation is the main challenge. Many adults hold basic conversations after a few months of lessons.

Do I need Swedish to live in Sweden?
