European or Brazilian Portuguese lessons in Torquay?

The two share grammar and spelling, but the sound is very different: European Portuguese swallows its vowels, Brazilian Portuguese is more open and easier for beginners to hear. If you are moving to Lisbon or the Algarve, ask for a tutor from Portugal; for Brazil, a Brazilian one.

Portuguese classes are rarer than Spanish ones in Devon, so many learners in Torquay turn to a private tutor, around £25 to £40 an hour face to face, or to native tutors online, often £10 to £25. A Spanish speaker progresses fast but must watch out for false friends.

CIPLE, DEPLE and Celpe-Bras: Portuguese exams for learners near Torquay

Portugal's official exams for foreigners, CIPLE (A2) and DEPLE (B1), are run by the University of Lisbon's CAPLE and offered in a few centres abroad. A2 is the level asked for Portuguese nationality. Brazil uses a single test, Celpe-Bras, which places you between intermediate and advanced.

From Torquay, check exam dates early: sessions are limited. A tutor who knows the format will train you on listening, which is often the hardest part with European Portuguese. Portuguese and Brazilian communities in many English towns also run cafés, churches and cultural events where you can practise.

Portuguese courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.

Portuguese courses in Torquay: common questions

What level of Portuguese do I need for Portuguese nationality?

Applicants usually need an A2 certificate, typically CIPLE. It is a basic level: everyday conversation, short texts and simple forms. Around 150 hours of lessons from scratch is a sensible target.

Is Portuguese hard if I already speak Spanish?

Reading comes almost free, but pronunciation and false friends take work. Many Spanish speakers reach a comfortable B1 in Portuguese within months, provided they train their ear with a native tutor.
