Italian evening classes and tutors in Portishead: prices and pace

Adult learning services and colleges in Somerset often run Italian for beginners and improvers in the evening, around £120 to £250 for a ten-week term. A private Italian tutor in Portishead usually charges £25 to £45 an hour; native tutors online start nearer £10 to £25.

Italian rewards English speakers quickly: the pronunciation is regular and many words are familiar. After a term of weekly lessons, ordering, asking the way and chatting about yourself feel natural. The subjunctive and the past tenses come later, at intermediate level.

CILS, CELI and PLIDA: certify your Italian from Portishead

Three Italian certificates are recognised by the Italian state: CILS (University for Foreigners of Siena), CELI (University for Foreigners of Perugia) and PLIDA (Società Dante Alighieri). B1 is the level asked for Italian citizenship by marriage or residence, so many learners in South West England aim at it.

The Italian Cultural Institutes in London and Edinburgh, and some universities, host exam sessions. From Portishead, an online tutor who prepares the B1 citizenship exam is often the most practical route. Between lessons, an Italian deli, café or film club nearby is a friendly place to try out what you have learnt.

Italian courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.
