French evening classes and tutors in University: costs and options

French is the language most widely taught in adult education in North Yorkshire: evening classes for beginners, improvers and conversation groups, around £120 to £250 for a ten-week term. The Alliance Française runs branches in several English cities. A private French tutor in University usually charges £25 to £45 an hour.

Online, native tutors from France, Belgium, Switzerland or Canada teach from around £10 to £30 an hour. If you studied French at school, a few conversation lessons often unlock more than you expect.

DELF, DALF and TCF: French certificates for adults in University

The DELF (A1 to B2) and DALF (C1, C2) diplomas are issued by the French Ministry of Education and never expire. French courses: three ways to make progress

One lesson a week over the year

The most common rhythm among adults: it keeps motivation up and moves you up roughly one level a year, provided you practise a little between lessons.

A sprint before an exam

Three or four lessons a week for one to two months, focused on the exam format, past papers and timing.

Pure conversation to build confidence

No textbook: you talk about your day, the news, your job, and the tutor corrects recurring mistakes as you go.

French courses in University: common questions

How can I refresh my school French quickly?

Start with conversation lessons rather than grammar drills: a tutor quickly finds what you remember and fills the gaps. Two short sessions a week plus French podcasts bring most people back to a comfortable level in a few months.

Which French exam is best for working in France?

The DELF B2 is widely recognised by employers and never expires. For a residence or citizenship application, French authorities usually accept the TCF or a DELF at the required level.
